The Composites Area at TECNALIA Research & Innovation continues to drive improvements in advanced manufacturing processes applied to the development of sustainable Type IV tanks for hydrogen storage.

Within Activity 3 – Sustainable thermoplastic tanks, TECNALIA has incorporated a laser triangulation device into its flexible AFP (Automated Fiber Placement) tape-laying cell, located at the Mikeletegi 2 facilities (Donostia).

This new system will enable:

• Real-time monitoring of the tape-laying layer evolution during the manufacturing of the tank’s outer reinforcement.

• Improved process control, ensuring more uniform and precise material deposition.

• Optimisation of laminate quality by reducing defects and increasing process repeatability.

• Progress towards safer, more efficient and more sustainable solutions in the field of composite materials for hydrogen applications.

The integration of advanced inspection and control technologies, such as laser triangulation, represents a key step towards the manufacturing of recyclable, high-performance Type IV tanks, one of the main objectives of ONTZHI-II.
